Salmon swimming upstream, then a bear catches it in it's mouth as it makes its final leap to the promised spawning grounds (or wherever those tasty pink fishes are going). This is my imagination when I think about switching careers. At first it feels right, going in a direction that challenges you and makes you feel alive. Then comes the bear to clasp its jaws of life to crunch your bones and swallow your delicious sushi flesh.
Eh. We are told as kids that if we go to a good college, do the extra curriculars, make friends, join clubs, blah blah blabbety blaaahh that everything will be alright, you'll get a good job etc. And they are right. I had a good job, decent pay, vacation time, etc. But I hated every minute of it. The work was boring and trivial in a dying industry.
The adult people who raised me, were so worried that I wouldn't be able to make a living in the career I wanted-something not involving a cubicle. They were convinced that out of all the "millions" that wanted the career I wanted, they didn't believe I would get it. Rather, they wanted me to get a steady job that involved little risk and you felt like a droid, "Yes, this is the droid you are looking for." And I'm bored out of my sanity.
They nearly had a conniption when I told them I was leaving my steady, low risk, minimal income job to move back south and pursue my dream job. Tough nuts, I'm doing it anyway. I tried their way now I'm going to try it my way. I already have a project lined up. It's going to be great! I'll post it once it's up.
All the best,
